Background of the Study
Teenage pregnancy is a persistent challenge in many developing regions, often stemming from a combination of socio-economic, cultural, and educational factors. In Mubi North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, high rates of teenage pregnancy are closely linked to low levels of adult literacy, which in turn affect the ability of communities to disseminate critical reproductive health information. Adult literacy programs have emerged as a promising intervention aimed at empowering communities with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions regarding family planning and reproductive health (Yakubu, 2023). These programs not only improve basic reading and writing skills but also integrate modules on sexual health education, gender equality, and the socio-economic implications of early pregnancy. By engaging adults—especially parents, teachers, and community leaders—in literacy initiatives, there is an opportunity to create a ripple effect that positively influences the behavior and attitudes of adolescents (Zainab, 2024).

The curriculum of adult literacy programs in Mubi North is designed to address the multifaceted aspects of teenage pregnancy. It focuses on imparting comprehensive sexual and reproductive health knowledge, debunking myths about contraception, and promoting gender-sensitive communication. Through interactive sessions, community workshops, and peer mentoring, these programs aim to foster an environment where accurate information is accessible and culturally acceptable. The transformative power of adult literacy is evident in its capacity to enhance critical thinking and empower individuals to challenge traditional norms that contribute to early pregnancy. As more adults become literate and informed, they are better positioned to provide guidance and support to adolescents, thus reducing the incidence of teenage pregnancies. This educational approach is supported by emerging research, which indicates that higher levels of community literacy correlate with improved reproductive health outcomes and lower rates of teenage pregnancy (Haruna, 2025). The integration of adult literacy with targeted health education is therefore essential in creating sustainable change and improving the overall well-being of the community (Yakubu, 2023; Zainab, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
In Mubi North Local Government Area, teenage pregnancy remains a critical public health and social challenge, largely attributed to inadequate reproductive health education and low levels of adult literacy. Many adults in the community lack sufficient knowledge about sexual health, contraception, and the socio-economic risks associated with early pregnancy, which in turn affects their ability to educate and guide adolescents (Yakubu, 2023). The existing reproductive health programs have been insufficiently integrated with adult literacy initiatives, resulting in persistent misinformation and cultural practices that favor early childbearing. This knowledge gap contributes to a cycle where teenagers are exposed to unchallenged cultural norms and misinformation regarding sexuality and pregnancy (Zainab, 2024). Additionally, economic hardships and limited access to health services further compound the problem, leaving young women vulnerable to early pregnancies that have long-term implications for their education and socio-economic status (Haruna, 2025). The problem is further exacerbated by a lack of community engagement in developing comprehensive educational programs that address both literacy and reproductive health. This study seeks to investigate how adult literacy programs can serve as a conduit for disseminating vital reproductive health information, thereby reducing teenage pregnancy rates in the area. By analyzing the relationship between adult education and teenage pregnancy, the study aims to propose targeted interventions that integrate literacy with reproductive health education, ultimately empowering the community to make informed decisions and break the cycle of early pregnancy (Yakubu, 2023; Zainab, 2024; Haruna, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the impact of adult literacy programs on the reduction of teenage pregnancy rates in Mubi North.

  • To assess the integration of reproductive health education within adult literacy curricula.

  • To recommend strategies for enhancing community awareness and reducing teenage pregnancy through educational interventions.

Research Questions

  • How does adult literacy affect teenage pregnancy rates in Mubi North?

  • What is the impact of integrated reproductive health education on community awareness?

  • Which strategies are most effective in reducing teenage pregnancy through adult education?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Adult literacy programs are significantly associated with reduced teenage pregnancy rates in Mubi North.

  • H2: The integration of reproductive health education into adult literacy curricula improves community awareness.

  • H3: Enhanced adult education leads to a measurable decrease in teenage pregnancy incidences.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of adult literacy in curbing teenage pregnancy by empowering communities with essential reproductive health knowledge. The research aims to provide policy recommendations that integrate literacy and health education, thus fostering informed decision-making among community members. The findings are expected to benefit policymakers, educators, and health practitioners by outlining effective strategies for reducing teenage pregnancy rates and improving overall community health and socio-economic outcomes (Yakubu, 2023; Zainab, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.
